How The "Felony Warrant" Scam Works
This new scam involves receiving calls from blocked or unlisted numbers, making it difficult to identify the caller.
Once you answer, they immediately begin telling you that you have a "felony warrant" issued for you and you need to take action.
This should be the first clue it's a scam, according to the Missoula County Sheriff's Office, but these scammers are not about to stop trying to get your money, as there are two parts to this scam.
Part Two: Text Messages And Payment Instructions
The second part of the scam comes when you hang up the phone, as you'll soon start to receive text messages instructing you on how to pay these supposed fines.
They love to make you feel a sense of urgency, as it helps to disorient you and can lead you to make a rash decision you normally wouldn't make.
How To Protect Yourself
The Missoula County Sheriff's Office suggests that you hang up the phone and then block the number to stop the harassment.
