Scammers Targeting Montana Students: Know The Warning Signs

Perhaps it's the way I was raised, but I don't know how anyone can try and take advantage of other people.

My parents also raised me to think critically about things and to be skeptical, but not everyone had parents like mine and can fall prey to scammers.

Scammers Are Going After Younger Residents

It makes me sad to read and hear about scammers taking advantage of people, especially those who are the most susceptible.

One of those groups are our younger Montana residents that might not have the life experience to easily sniff out a scam.

Even if a scammer fails 99 times if the 100th person they try to scam falls for it, it's worth it in the end. That's why it's important to always talk to your kids about being on the lookout for these new scams targeting them.

Three Scams Targeting Students In Montana

The first scam that is making the rounds online is an Employment Scam. This scam will look like a regular online job posting, but in reality they just want your personal information and money.

The next scam is an Online Purchase Scam. I'll admit I fell for this one years ago when I was shopping for a vacuum. I saw a very expensive one for less than half the price, but the package never arrived. Luckily enough, it was through Amazon, so I was able to get my money back. Most people aren't so lucky.

Our last scam to be on the lookout for is an Investment/Crypto Scam. Bitcoin, Dogecoin, and Ethereum are just a few of the cryptocurrencies out there that scammers are promising big returns from if you just give them their money.

If you or your kid are between the ages of 18-to-24, they are the prime age to be targeted by these scams, so make sure to teach your kids that if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
