Planning to train your dog on wild game birds this season? A bird dog training license is now mandatory, and you must adhere to specific season dates for training on public land.

This is the second year this requirement has been in place following its introduction during the last Montana legislative session.

There has been a slight adjustment to the nonresident season dates, moving the start date from August 15 to September 1.

Here's what you need to know:

Who Needs This License: Anyone training bird dogs on wild game birds must have a bird dog training license, whether training on private or public land.

How to Obtain This License: Licenses can be purchased online, at an FWP office, or from any license provider. They cost $5 for Montana residents over 18 and $10 for nonresidents over 18.

Additional Requirements: A special recreational use license (SRUL) from the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) may also be required for training on state school trust lands.
