Moose-terious Encounter: What to Do if You Spot Williston’s Furry Friend
The Williston Police Department is advising residents to stay alert due to a moose sighting near Halliburton Drive. While moose may seem like majestic and gentle creatures, it’s important to remember that they can be unpredictable and sometimes aggressive, especially if they feel threatened. Our Community Service Officers, who specialize in animal control, are actively monitoring the moose’s location to ensure the safety of both the animal and the public.
In the meantime, here’s how you can stay safe:
Stay alert while driving. Moose are large animals and can be hard to spot, especially at dawn or dusk. If you’re driving in the area, keep your eyes peeled for any signs of wildlife.
Slow down if you see a moose nearby. Moose may suddenly dart into the road or change direction without warning, so slowing down can help you react in time.
Give them plenty of space. It’s tempting to get closer for a better look, but moose can be aggressive if they feel cornered or threatened. Always observe from a distance and never try to approach or feed them.
Keep your distance if you encounter one. Moose are not domesticated animals and can become dangerous if they feel uneasy. Always err on the side of caution and avoid interaction.
Get in touch with the Williston Police Department at the number 701.577.1212 if you come across the moose in a potentially dangerous area, such as close to a highly traveled road. Working together, we can contribute to the protection of the community as well as the local animals!
