Speed Limits & Slowpokes: The Top Pet Peeves of North Dakota Drivers Revealed
At 660 KEYZ News Radio, we recently asked the burning question on our Facebook page: "What are your worst pet peeves when it comes to driving in North Dakota?" Buckle up because the responses were as diverse as the open prairie itself!
Let’s start with an age-old frustration: Not obeying the speed limit. One user didn’t mince words, calling out drivers who treat speed limits as “suggestions.” Whether it’s zipping through residential areas or crawling along on the highway, the speedsters—and the sloths—definitely struck a nerve.
Randy Ramsey chimed in with a specific peeve: “People flying up 26th between Harvest and Racers using excessive speed. Even Jan Follman Halvorson added, “Very true,” confirming that it’s not just a one-off experience. I live in this area, and speeding on this street is getting carried away!
John A. Sieg kept things simple but direct: Lack of turn signal usage. It's a classic peeve, and Betty Jo Falcon backed it up, calling out drivers for their apparent allergy to blinkers. You’d think the turn signal was an optional feature!
Another hot topic? Tailgating. Jeanne Buschta had enough, labeling it her number one annoyance. It seems there’s a silent consensus: there’s no reason to be so close unless you’re inspecting the make of the car in front of you.
Lexie Hinricksen hit on the universal frustration of left-lane drivers. There’s something about people camping out in the passing lane like it’s their personal parking spot that gets under people’s skin. Maria Nenow and Kari Evenson echoed this sentiment, with the latter listing it alongside other gripes like tailgaters and, you guessed it, no blinkers!
Speaking of technology, Brock Sailer noted the irony of modern cars being equipped with hands-free features, yet drivers are still holding phones. Rhonda Daniel agreed, highlighting the classic phone-distracted driver as a common irritant.
For me, this is a very personal matter. The use of roundabouts! Do you come to a halt? Slow to a crawl, and merge? Be careful, because that pickup is not going to slow down! As much as I can, I stay away from them!
And don’t get us started on red light runners and stop sign ignorers—a category that Tommy Rees, Daphne Clark, and Tina Schroeder can all agree deserves more attention.
Thanks to everyone who answered our Facebook question. In a nutshell, North Dakota drivers are dealing with their fair share of road annoyances. Whether it’s round-abouts or rock chips in the windshield, it’s clear that the roads might be wide, but the pet peeves are even wider!
