Counterfeit Cash Alert: Williston North Dakota Police Share Warning for Local Businesses
The Williston Police Department is reminding local businesses and employees to stay alert after receiving multiple reports involving counterfeit currency being passed around in WIlliston.
According to the department, officers received three reports in a single day involving counterfeit bills. While some fake bills can be easy to identify, others are designed to look convincing at first glance and may not be noticed during a busy transaction.
What Local Businesses Should Look For
Many of the counterfeit bills being reported include markings such as “For Motion Picture Use” or “Copy Money.” These phrases may be overlooked if a bill is not carefully inspected, but taking a few extra seconds to examine cash could help prevent a costly loss for a business.
The Williston Police Department encourages employees to carefully check bills before accepting payment, especially larger denominations. Some warning signs to watch for include unusual words printed on the bill, differences in texture or color compared to genuine currency, and unusual or repeated serial numbers.

Detection Tools and Reporting Procedures
Businesses are also encouraged to use counterfeit detection pens if they have them available and to make sure all employees know what to look for when handling cash transactions.
If someone believes they have received a counterfeit bill, the department advises them not to attempt to spend it or pass it along to someone else. Instead, contact the Williston Police Department at 701-577-1212 as soon as possible.
