Police in Williston North Dakota Warn Residents of New Scam Involving Dating Apps and Fake Calls
Is it just me, or are scams getting out of control? The Williston Police Department has issued a new warning after being made aware of a troubling scheme targeting residents through dating apps and phone calls.
How the Dating App Scam Unfolds: Fake Officer and Parent Scheme Targets Victims
Here’s how it works: an individual may receive “private” photos from the person they’re chatting with on a dating platform. Shortly after, the victim receives a phone call from someone claiming to be a Williston Police Officer. The caller insists that the person in the photos is underage, immediately raising alarm for the victim.

But the scam doesn’t stop there. A second individual—posing as a parent—then joins the conversation. This “parent” pressures the victim to send money, often using emotional pleas such as needing funds for medical expenses, or threatening legal consequences if payment is not made.
The goal is simple: to scare the victim into handing over money quickly before they realize it’s a scam.
