Williston North Dakota Residents Urged to Watch for Gas Pump Skimmers
The Williston Police Department is urging residents to be cautious after skimming devices were recently discovered at local gas stations. Detectives have recovered two of these devices so far and want the public to know how to spot them and protect themselves from becoming victims of fraud.

What is a skimmer?
A skimmer is an illegal card-reading device that can be discreetly attached to a payment terminal, such as a gas pump. When you swipe your card, the skimmer captures data from the magnetic stripe without your knowledge. That stolen information can then be sold or used for fraudulent purchases. Many victims don’t realize their data has been compromised until unfamiliar charges appear on their accounts or they receive overdraft notices.
How to protect yourself at the pump:
Check the pump panel. If it appears loose, damaged, or if the security seal says “VOID,” do not use it.
Compare card readers. If one looks different from the others at the same station, it could be a skimmer. Try wiggling the reader—if it moves, alert the attendant and choose another pump.
Run debit cards as credit. This way, you avoid entering your PIN, which can also be stolen.
Pay inside. If you’re uncertain about a pump, go into the station to complete your transaction.
Monitor your accounts. Regularly check your bank and credit card statements to quickly catch unauthorized charges.
If you suspect fraud:
Contact your bank or card issuer immediately.
Report it to the Williston Police Department’s non-emergency line at 701-713-3355.

As police emphasize, skimmers can blend in seamlessly with regular payment terminals, making them hard to detect. Before swiping, take a moment to inspect the pump and report anything suspicious to station staff and the Williston Police Department. A little caution can go a long way in preventing identity theft and financial loss.
