Williston State College Enhances Scholarship Program for Greater Student Flexibility
Williston State College (WSC) is excited to announce a newly restructured scholarship program, aimed at providing students with increased flexibility and control over their education expenses. Recent updates to WSC’s scholarship offerings have prompted questions, and we are pleased to reassure the community that scholarships remain a core element of WSC’s commitment to affordability and accessibility in higher education.
Greater Flexibility and Coverage with the Homesteader Scholarship
The Homesteader Scholarship has been restructured to give students access to up to $4,000 annually, offering a broader range of financial support beyond just tuition and fees. Now, students can allocate these funds toward books, housing, and food, allowing them to better manage their specific financial needs while in college. By extending the scholarship’s reach to cover these essential costs, WSC ensures students have greater control over their expenses, making higher education more accessible than ever.
“By expanding the scope of how scholarship funds can be used, we’re helping students make their financial aid go further,” said Hunter Berg, Executive Director of the Williston State College Foundation. “This flexibility means that more students can afford college without the financial strain that often comes with hidden costs like housing and books.”
Clearing Up Misconceptions: Affordable, Not “Free” College
While some may wonder if WSC’s new program equates to “free college,” WSC continues to focus on affordability rather than eliminating all costs. With the Homesteader Scholarship covering a variety of expenses and more than 45 additional scholarships available, students have expanded opportunities to attend WSC with minimal out-of-pocket costs. Combined with federal aid options, such as Pell Grants, students are empowered to make the most of their financial resources.
“Our priority is to ensure every student has access to an affordable, high-quality education,” said Dr. Bernell Hirning, President of Williston State College. “The new scholarship structure offers more versatility, helping students manage not only tuition but also their living expenses.”
How the New Scholarship Structure Works
- Up to $4,000 per year: Scholarship funds can be used for tuition, fees, books, housing, and food.
- Comprehensive coverage: WSC’s scholarships now cover more than just tuition, easing additional financial burdens.
- Maximized aid: Scholarships are applied after federal grants, enabling students to maximize their financial support.
Affordable and Accessible Education for All
As one of the most affordable higher education institutions in the region, Williston State College’s scholarship program ensures that students can navigate their educational journeys without significant financial stress. This new structure is a testament to WSC’s dedication to supporting students’ unique financial needs, and empowering them to succeed.
