Life in the Middle of Nowhere: MT Ranks #1 For Most Isolated Town
Montana is known for its wide-open landscapes, untamed wilderness, and rural areas. Hence the nick name "Last Best Place." With 1,142,750 residents, calculated in 2024, spread across more than 147,000 square miles, the Big Sky state is the place to be for those seeking space and solitude.
Remarkably, Montana didn't surpass a population of one million until 2012. For all of you worried about the state's growth rate, we are actually in a slump of only .9% compared to the boom during covid of 1.8%.

Still, with our population being over a million and the influx of people moving here recently, Montana still holds the record for the most isolated town in the lower 48. Yee-Haw...
Drumroll, please! Say hello to Glasgow, Montana—the most isolated town in America. Alaska may have more remote cities, but we're not counting them since it's practically the North Pole!
How do we define the most remote town in America?
There are certainly less populated towns and more remote places with the title of unincorporated. However, it was calculated that the town of Glasgow (population over 1,000) is the farthest from any city of 75,000 or more people. If you want to go anywhere outside of Glasgow, it will be about a 4.5-hour drive.
Glasgow Has a Great Sense of Humor
If you live somewhere so isolated, you've got to embrace the nothingness. That's why the official town slogan is "The Middle of Nowhere." You can find t-shirts there with the slogan, and there is even a painted mural in town making sure you know where you are... Nowhere.
