A New Year and Brick and Mortar Businesses Continue To Close

We are not off to a good start for closures in 2026 in the state of North Dakota. Numerous businesses plan to close here in the Capital Region alone, including two big announcements this past week. This includes Eddie Bauer in the Kirkwood Mall, and an even bigger shocker earlier last week, that Landers' Shell and Northside Market will close at the end of February. You can read more about that below.

Now, it appears that gamers will feel the impact of losing a brick-and-mortar business. GameStop is in the process of closing 400 stores and counting, and according to Polygon, they are facing a lot of turmoil as they head into 2026.

GameStop Announces Closure List

GameStop kicked off the new year by closing more stores than expected. As of last week, 295 stores were either already closed or in the process of closing, including one store in North Dakota. That number has recently jumped to 400 stores and counting, with more employees expecting terminations to come by the end of the month.

We have two GameStop locations in Bismarck. One location in Kirkwood Mall, and another GameStop location in North Bismarck at 1410 Skyline Boulevard, Suite 110. As of right now, those stores are okay, but by the sounds of what is going on with the company, I wouldn't feel too safe.

The North Dakota GameStop that recently closed is in Fargo

Fargo, like Bismarck, also has (had) two GameStop locations, one in West Acres Mall and the other in Central Market Place at 1801 45th Street South. According to a GameStop closing list and the GameStop website, the 45th Street location closed on January 7th.

We will continue to monitor this developing situation.
