The world was hit by a huge IT outage early Friday morning. It's being called the largest IT outage in history. Millions of people have been affected and many companies, including in Minnesota, were and still are being impacted this morning.

What's the Global IT Outage?

Reports, including from CNN, say that at least part of the reason for this massive outage is due to "a software update for Microsoft Windows operating systems issued by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike".

The Associated Press reports that CrowdStikes says the believed issue "was not a security incident or cyberattack."

That's definitely good news but this outage is still severely impacting many, many people. While CrowdStikes CEO says that a fix has been deployed, according to CNN, people are still experiencing issues around the world.

How the Global IT Outage is Affecting Minnesota

One of the impacts of this outage was on airlines. MSP had to ground many flights this morning. Pauleen Le for WCCO shared that travelers should not rely on the monitors at airports or MSP's website because they aren't able to update them at the moment.

Airlines affected included Delta, Sun Country, and Frontier. Delta shared on X that they expect to have more delays and cancellations throughout today.

Sun Country announced the same.

The outage also has impacted local TV stations who were no longer able to go live on the air this morning. WCCO was one of them who announced early this morning that they were not able to go on air.

Emergency services across Minnesota were also impacted, including in Hennepin County, Ramsey County, and Beltrami County, according to Bring Me the News.

Many other businesses have been affected by the outage too. One of my co-workers said that Hy-Vee Gas in Rochester was impacted this morning and I'm sure there are many more.

Hopefully the situation will be sorted out before we all head into the weekend.
