The researchers based their findings on Google searches for "polite words and phrases." Montanans seem to have a penchant for saying "please" and "thank you" because those terms were popping up in their searches more than in any other state.

Following Montana's lead in the politeness race are some other contenders for the crown of courtesy. Vermont, Alabama, Minnesota, and Delaware round out the top five. Now, for the not-so-polite news, California finds itself at the bottom of the politeness ladder. Oops!

This whole study is quite fascinating, and it was conducted by WordFinder. They decided to explore not only accents and regional language differences but also the level of politeness in each state. They used Google Trends search data to figure out which states are all about using polite language. Plus, they threw in some terms of endearment and slang for good measure.

Montana, the crowned champ of politeness, stood out for having over 270,000 polite word searches per 100,000 residents in the past year. "Please" was their go-to word, and they affectionately use "angel" as a term of endearment. When it comes to slang, they're all about "Understood the assignment."

Vermont grabbed the second spot for politeness, and Alabama secured a solid third place. Minnesota and Delaware made it to the top five, proving they've got some good manners to share.

There's more good news for the courteous crowd. Other states, like Wyoming, South Dakota, Arkansas, Utah, Hawaii, Idaho, and North Dakota, also showed a knack for politeness. North Dakota, in particular, had a thing for "gracious" and "handsome" when it comes to endearing terms. They even gave a nod to classic surfer lingo with "stoked" as their top-searched slang term.
