As someone with over 40 tattoos, I know how important it is to choose the right artist. Check their portfolio and social media to ensure their style matches your vision. Visit the shop, ask questions, and confirm they have the proper licenses—tattoos can only be done in licensed facilities, and these should be displayed prominently.

Think Before You Ink

There’s a lot to consider before getting a tattoo; what design to choose and where to place it. Just as important is making sure the process is safe and hygienic.

Hygiene is critical. No offense to your cousin Tony, but getting a tattoo in his garage with a questionable needle and a six-pack as payment probably isn’t the best idea.

Ask Questions and Follow Aftercare

Artists must use fresh needles for each client—don’t be afraid to ask them to show you. If they don’t, insist or leave. Speak up if you’re unsure about anything—a good artist will be happy to answer questions and ensure you feel comfortable. Follow your artist’s aftercare instructions carefully.
